Abstract

The article reveals the major trends of historical transformation of the social institution of family in contemporary Ukraine. The article deals with the problems of family adaptation to new socio-economic conditions due to changes in structural and functional characteristics. The topicality of the material considered in the article is pressuposed by the negative trends’ development in modern families (increasing number of divorces for psychological reasons, reduced birth rate, role overload of the young couples etc.). This issue disturbs the specialists in different branches of science. The family is a necessary element of the social structure of human society, an important institution of socialization. Deformation of the function of the family that consistently occurred in the last decade through the formation of social and cultural reforms that has led to disruption of the whole relationship between them. The state of the modern family is becoming less dependent on the influence of society, the importance of interpersonal relationships within the family is increasing, and consumer relations between spouses and their children dominate. This determines the relevance of the study of the family in the context of the transformation of modern society. All these things lead to the need for a new approach of the family problems, distribution of roles, its relationships with the social environment.
