Ukrainian and polish dimensions of national identity in the system of professional training for future history teachers

The author has carried out comparative studies on the theoretical and analytical understanding of the processes involved in the formation of national identity among future history teachers within the university education system, and has highlighted the significance of this issue. In this regard, the issue is examined in the Ukrainian and Polish contexts of the phenomenon of ‘national identity’. This highlights the importance of studying this phenomenon for the professional training of future history teachers. It has been argued that future history teachers should act both as custodians and as conveyors of historical memory and historical knowledge, which will be passed on to pupils in general secondary education as a key component of their future professional practice and as part of the pedagogical competence of a history teacher. The focus is on the professional determinants of a history teacher’s professionalism as a citizen of Ukraine. This article sets out the views of Ukrainian and Polish academics on the historical evolution of the concept of ‘identity’ in the context of the formation of national consciousness in Ukrainian and Polish society. An analysis of research and publications in this context has been carried out, with particular emphasis placed on the key factors shaping the national identity of future history teachers within their professional training programmes at Ukrainian and Polish universities. A comparative analysis of these systems in Ukraine and the Republic of Poland has been carried out, and the prospects for further stages of scientific research have been outlined. The article is theoretical and analytical in nature.
