The article discusses the use of distance learning as a daily (neoclassical) practice of the educational process. It is noted that mass communicative breeding in the space of the bearer and the recipient of educational information creates a new educational paradigm that levels out the existing traditional model of classroom interaction between the parties. It is argued that a complete transition to distance education contradicts the very essence of higher education, namely: the formation of a full-fledged social and intellectual personality within the natural scientific environment. It is warned that distance learning can under no circumstances replace classical education, but should be considered only as a forced or auxiliary measure, limited by the time and amount of action. The aspects of the study of the phenomenon of distance learning are determined: educational, social, commercial, technical, civilizational or humanitarian. The experience of distance learning at V.N. V. Dahl during the period of the first quarantine restriction (spring semester 2020). The main virtual platforms and systems involved in this process are highlighted: MOODLE, Skype, Zoom, Discort, Big Blue Button conference. The negative situational and perspective aspects of the mass use of the distance learning system are revealed, namely: emotional-psychological, humanitarian-educational, procedural and educational-technical. Conclusions are drawn about the irreversibility of the process of "digitalization" of society, and, first of all, in the field of education and the need for a thorough study of the issues of social and psychological consequences of the widespread use of distance learning in educational institutions of the middle and higher level.
