The article is devoted to the problem of social value of the teacher's profession and the dependence of this category on the observance of spiritual and moral principles in work. The teacher is the main carrier and leader of the spiritual and moral values of society. His purpose is the creation and strengthening of the values of the state. However, economic problems in educational sphere put teachers to the situation where they should choose spiritual, moral or convenient position. There is a discrepancy between the social purpose of the teacher's profession and the social conditions of today in which the value function is embodied.
It is important that these processes take place against the background of active social change, which requires clearer and more focused axiological emphasis in public education policy and emphasis on spiritual and moral issues at the level of practice of educational institutions. Weakening by the state, respect for the spiritual and moral component in education led to the intensification of the informal component in the moral and ethical sphere. Now we have the situation in which formal legislation indicates the need and obligation of teachers to adhere to ethical principles, but in practice, informal laws have an impact, which in some situations are more effective than formal ones, which weakens the effectiveness of teachers.
Carried out work gives grounds to assert the expediency of studying the reasons for the dependence of democratic development, the restructuring of social relations and the attitude in society to the teacher as a social value.
We focused on the interdependence of such qualitative indicators as the strength of the state, the quality of education and the level of social value of the teacher's profession. In particular, the article shows that the prestige of pedagogical activity, and hence its social value among Ukrainian society, at the present stage of development, tends to deteriorate.
We draw attention to the need to intensify state support for the spiritual and moral aspect of education through the creation of conditions under which the main indicator of the quality of the teacher should be the spiritual and moral component of his activities, and the economic component should be ancillary.
