The article deals with the problem of forming the communicative competence of the future choral conductor. The article analyses the scientific definitions of “competence”, “expertise”, “conversation” and “communication”. The specificity of the choral conductor's communicative activity is characterised. It has been determined that the competence of the future choral conductor lies in his/her readiness to optimise vocal and choral activity, the ability to solve musical-theoretical and choirmaster tasks at a high qualification level depending on the existing conditions. It has been proved that the competence approach is the basis for the successful implementation of conducting and choral knowledge, skills and abilities of students in their future professional activities.
A substantive review of the studied categories has made it possible to carry out an in-depth analysis of the concept of “communicative competence” and to consider different approaches to its definition. Consideration of the conductor's activity through the prism of the communicative space defines him/her as a communicator in the process of transferring the artistic idea to the participants of musical performance communication in the “composer – conductor”, “conductor – choir”, “conductor – listener” nexus. Of particular importance is the communicative competence in the process of communication between the conductor and the choir.
It has been established that communicative competence is a component of the integral structure of the basic competences of the future choral conductor. The main difficulties in the formation of students' communicative competence in the process of professional training in higher education institutions are identified, the functions of the studied phenomenon are characterised.
The article determines that the communicative competence of a choral conductor is an integrative formation of a personality in the integral structure of the conductor's professional competence, which is an indicator of the formation of a set of professional skills, including theoretical knowledge and practical skills; combining vocal and choral knowledge, conducting experience and personal communication qualities, due to the conductor's desire, willingness and ability to reveal the musical and figurative content of the performed works, to solve problems and tasks arising in the process of rehearsals and concert performances with a choir, while realising the significance of the result of choral activity.
