A model of leadership in military education: a comparative analysis based on international approaches

Abstract

The concept of “military leader” as an authoritative personality who has the ability to make key decisions in accordance with his interests and the nature of his overall activities is examined in the article. This kind of a leader, using his or her competence and character, system of values and motivation, is able to ensure the successful completion of tasks, unite personnel for coordinated work and meet the individual needs of military personnel as much as possible, leading them to achieve the set goal.
People become military leaders through continuous development and achievement of excellence, combining practical training and gained experience.
The key areas of leadership qualities of servicemen and the peculiarities of training for their formation and development are considered. Today, the methodology of “Character-Based Leadership” is being studied and popularized all over the world, and in Ukraine it is also used in the educational sector. According to it, a leader must possess certain virtues (11 in total) from three general components: competencies (intelligence,
human capital, organization, business and strategy), commitment (involvement, aspiration and sacrifice), character: values, traits, virtues.
